Vasoconstrictor medicine for local use in ENT practice. Xylometazoline is capable of a pronounced alpha adrenomimetic effect. It has an effect on the lumen of the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa, thus eliminating edema and hyperemia of the nasal pharynx mucosa. Facilitates nasal breathing in inflammatory processes in the mucous membrane of the mucosa. The drug is well used by patients with sensitive epithelium, its action does not prevent the discharge of mucus. The drug has a balanced pH, characteristic of the nasal passages. The drug contains components without an active pharmacological effect - sorbitol and hypromellose, which have a moisturizing effect, which allows to reduce the symptoms of inflammation and dryness of the nasal mucous epithelium, arising from the long-term use of xylometazoline. In normal doses, does not destroy the mucous, does not cause hyperemia. The effect occurs within 1-2 minutes after application and lasts for 12 hours.
When applied topically, the drug is practically not absorbed, plasma concentrations are so low that they can not be detected by modern laboratory methods.

The drug is contraindicated with high blood pressure; tachycardia; pronounced vascular atherosclerosis; glaucoma; rhinitis with mucosal atrophy; hyperthyroidism; surgical procedures on the meninges (in the history of the disease); increased sensitivity to medication components. It is used with caution in patients with high blood glucose, cardiovascular diseases, with increased sensitivity to adrenergic drugs, accompanied by symptoms of sleep disorders, dizziness, heart rhythm disturbances, tremors, high blood pressure.
Perhaps the appearance of local reactions: with frequent or prolonged use - irritation or dryness of the mucous membrane of the nasal passages, burning sensation, tingling, frequent sneezing, the appearance of mucous discharge; less often - swelling of the nasal mucosa.In addition, systemic reactions: with prolonged use - dyspepsia; less often - tachycardia, feeling of heartbeat, arrhythmia, increased blood pressure, pain in the head, dizziness, vomiting, sleep disturbance, blurred vision, various allergies; with prolonged use and in high doses - depressive reactions.
In the period of pregnancy and during the period of breastfeeding, the drug should be used only after a competent study of the relationship between the benefits and benefits for the mother and the fetus; the recommended dosages should not be increased. When using the drug in children under the age of 1 year, a consultation with a specialist is required. Children in the age group of 6 years, the drug should be used in the presence of parents. No need to increase the recommended dosage and duration of use of the drug, especially in children and age patients. Effects on ability to drive and control complex machinery. Xylometazoline does not affect the ability to drive a car and control complex machinery.
